The Chicago Cubs are having one of their worst seasons as a team with a high payroll had become accustomed to recent playoff disappointment but this year their season didn't even make it that far. The Cubs have been outscored by 85 earned runs and as a team they are hitting .262 as Starlin Castro leads in batting average at .317, Alfonso Soriano leading in home runs with 21 and RBI's with 69, and Marlon Byrd leads in runs scored with 72. As a team the Cubs pitching staff has an ERA of 4.44 with the starters at 4.09 and the bullpen at 5.13. For game one against the Mets the Cubs start Randy Wells who ended a five decision losing streak last time out. For the season Wells has allowed 175 hits and 80 earned runs while striking out 124 in 160 innings of work.
Chicago is 6-1 in their last seven against a team with a losing record, 11-23 in their last 34 overall, 1-6 in Wells' last seven starts, and 3-10 in their last 13 home games. New York is 6-1 in their last seven game one of a series, 2-5 in their last seven against a right handed starter, 4-0 in Dickey's last four starts, and 1-4 in their last five road games. New York has won four of the last five times these two have met but they have lost four of their last five in Chicago.
Dickey has pitched well this season and Wells has been decent but he has no luck at all, the product of playing on a very bad team. The Mets should have some confidence after beating the Braves and Tim Hudson in Atlanta and at this price, they are the obvious choice.
